Omega-3 Fatty Acids

You may have seen the word EFA or Omega-3 fatty acids in the past. Do you understand what they are? EFA stands for essential fatty acid. This means that your body cannot synthesize them from other fats. So you they are “essential” in your diet. Omega-3, Omega -6, and Omega-9 are the 3 in the EFA group.

Our diets in America are loaded with Omega-6 and 9, and are highly lacking in Omega-3. One study suggests a 50:1 ratio, when it should be 1:1. Hence, we must eat lots of fish or flax/borage oils or we can supplement our diet. Omega-3 fatty acids are responsible for smooth functioning of the brain and nervous system, can help with joints, cholesterol lowering, lowering inflammation in the body, anti-cancer, anti-alzheimers, anti-diabetes, the list is almost endless. It is nearly a perfect food!

Fish oil is a great source and not costly. The problem is that a lot of fish oils, if not cleaned out well, contain mercury, PCB’s, arsenic and other contaminants. So you must get a guaranteed and tested source. Ultra-refined, microfiltered, distilled etc.. are the words you want to see. Just because they say this on the bottle does not mean that it was done.
